South Africa’s Landfill Crisis – What Can We Do?

Writer: Mische LawrenceMische Lawrence

South Africa is facing a major waste problem. A recent report from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment (DFFE) found that most landfill sites in the country aren’t being managed properly. This means waste is piling up in the wrong places, harming the environment and putting people’s health at risk.

Of the 544 landfill sites nationwide, the DFFE looked at 154 landfill sites and found:

·         16% (25 sites) were fully compliant.

·         24% (37 sites) were partially compliant.

·         60% (92 sites) were non-compliant.

Waste isn’t being handled correctly, leading to pollution, unsafe conditions, and growing costs for businesses and municipalities. If we don’t act now, this problem will only get worse.

The effects of poor waste management can already be seen. Water and soil pollution are increasing, pests and disease are spreading, and landfill space is running out. The cost of fixing these issues keeps rising, affecting everyone.

At Jumper Waste Management, we’re working to change this. We offer waste management solutions that help businesses, farms, and communities reduce landfill waste. Our services include responsible waste disposal, recycling programs, food waste composting, and safe hazardous waste removal.

This crisis won’t fix itself, and landfills are filling up fast, but small changes can make a big difference. Whether you're a business owner, or farmer, we can help you manage waste the right way!
