IPWIS: Waste Reporting in the Western Cape

In the world of waste management, accurate reporting and data are essential in assisting authorities  and municipalities with developing waste management frameworks to create and implement environments that assist in creating sustainable waste management structures.

To support this effort, the Western Cape Government has developed the Integrated Pollutant and Waste Information System (IPWIS) through the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning.

This powerful online tool is transforming how waste and pollution data is tracked, reported, and managed.

The National Waste Information Regulations, 2012, require generators of waste that meet the threshold, to register and report their waste data to Integrated Pollutant and Waste Information System (IPWIS). Accurate waste information is essential for waste management planning and to provide an understanding of the quantities and types of waste being generated, disposed of, and diverted.

What is IPWIS?

IPWIS is a centralized online platform designed to streamline waste and pollutant reporting within the Western Cape. It allows businesses to efficiently submit waste data, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and contributing to a more sustainable environment. By using IPWIS, companies help create a transparent picture of waste generation and management across the region, aiding government agencies in developing more effective environmental policies.

Who must report on IPWIS?

For companies that generate waste or handle pollutants, reporting through IPWIS is a regulatory requirement:

  1. Regulatory Compliance: Failure to report waste generation can lead to legal penalties.

  2. Environmental Protection: By tracking waste and pollutants, IPWIS helps in reducing environmental impact and promoting eco-friendly practices.

  3. Informed Decision-Making: The data collected via IPWIS aids policymakers in understanding waste patterns and creating data-driven strategies to improve waste management infrastructure and policies.

  4. Corporate Responsibility: Customers and stakeholders increasingly expect businesses to operate sustainably.

How often must reporting be done?

Municipalities and industry in the province are required to report waste disposal and diversion data on the provincial IPWIS on a monthly basis.
